What is PPC and How Does it Work?

Pay-per-click (PPC) is an online advertising model in which advertisers are charged each time a user clicks on one of their online ads. There is a cost per click. If you have ever been shopping online and seen shopping ads on the side of the page, that is PPC advertising. 

PPC ads come in different forms, but one of the most commonly used is the paid search ad. These types of ads use search queries to target people who are already looking for that category of product or service. For example, if you search for “stovetop espresso maker” in a search engine, you may start seeing ads for different brands of stovetop espresso makers, espresso coffee grounds, and other related items as you browse other sites. 

In PPC advertising, the companies running ads are only charged if someone clicks on their ad.

How Does PPC Advertising Work?

It’s not quite as simple as businesses paying more to ensure that their ads show up instead of those of their competitors. For ads to appear next to search engine result pages (SERPs), they have to go through an Ad Auction. This is an automated process in which Google and other major search engines use to determine the value, relevance, and validity of the advertisements that are bidding to make an appearance on their SERPs. 

Why Keywords are Important

The Ad Auction that each advertisement must go through is a bidding system in which advertisers put bids on the terms that they want to be triggers for their ads. These trigger words are known as keywords. 

One example of this process would be to imagine that your business specialized in sound equipment. A user who wanted to purchase new headphones, portable speakers, or a turntable might enter the keyword “sound equipment” into a search engine to find businesses who offer these products. 

When the user enters their search query, the search engine fires the complex algorithmic calculations that make up the Ad Auction. This determines which advertisements are prioritized and displayed, and by which advertiser. 

To get ROI from your ad spend, it is crucial to only bid on keywords that are absolutely relevant to your business. You pay for each click on your ad, so it makes no sense to go overboard with keywords that aren’t directly related to your product and advertisements. There are keyword tools and software that work to identify relevant keywords that are likely to drive sales or conversions, and are not as expensive.
